The medieval fort of Čanjevo stands on the south-western slopes of the Kalnik hills. It was built in the 15th century as a castle of the noble Špirančić family and later passed to the Praškoci family, who enlarged it into a strong fortress with ramparts and round towers.
Its importance grew especially during the Ottoman threat, when it became part of the defence system with a permanent garrison of haramije (foot soldiers). It was home to both nobles and soldiers, as archaeological finds show – stove tiles, pipes, and glass and metal objects. It lost its military importance at the end of the 17th century and was abandoned in the mid-18th century.
Traces of a Copper Age settlement have also been found at the foot of the fort, making Čanjevo one of the most valuable archaeological sites in the region.
