Forts and castles

Pusta Bela, Bela I and Bela II

Three forts and castles with very similar names, a short distance apart. Pusta Bela burned down in 1481 and is now an archaeological site – with a legend that Richard the Lionheart stayed there. Below it stand Bela I and Bela II of the Erdödy family.

The area around Novi Marof teems with the remains of medieval forts – so many that three of them even share very similar names.

Pusta Bela is the name given to the remains of a fort that burned down in 1481 and is now an important archaeological site. Built in a fairy-tale setting near a drinking-water spring, with a lovely view of the Bednja valley, it has a fascinating history that includes the legend that the English king Richard the Lionheart stayed here on his way back from the Third Crusade.

Bela I was built below Pusta Bela at the beginning of the 17th century, and after the estate passed to the Erdödy family, they built another castle in the park – Bela II. Besides its historical significance, the whole complex is interesting as a showcase of different building styles.
